LOCAL GOVERNMENT PRIVACY/ SMART CITIES
Our cities collect, store, use and share vast amounts of personal information in order to govern and provide services to the community.
Local governments in Australia are required to comply with the privacy law applicable in their State or Territory. This impacts how they collect, store, secure, use and disclose personal information – in terms of day-to-day business, service delivery, new projects and programs, emergency management, Smart City initiatives and much more.
Smart Cities – is your city privacy-ready to embrace the Smart City ethos?
Smart City initiatives are all about using the data of our urban environments and our citizens to make life better – more connected, more accessible, faster, cleaner, safer and sustainable into the future. These initiatives will involve the use of Internet of Things (IoT) and other connected technologies, which can raise community concern (particularly if the initiatives are, from a public perspective, mysterious and poorly understood).
Privacy concerns associated with Smart City initiatives can be both real/ measurable (that is, there is an actual risk) and perceived (that is, there is a worry or a fear within the community). It is vital that cities identify these concerns early and coordinate a targeted information privacy program in order to address them.
Privacy by Design requires that privacy is built in to Smart City planning from the outset. This supports collection and handling of personal information in accordance with the law and, importantly, enhances community trust.
